Educate Refugees’ latest project in South Sudan is a health care center in Malek. Again, Deng has been the cornerstone of this project, spending months with the community preparing the site, laying cement, and putting up dividing walls for the building that will house Malek’s first ever primary care clinic. Jordan, a high school graduate who raised $5,000 for mosquito nets, educational materials and other items, joined Deng on the last trip to help with the building. An Educate Refugees alumnus, Jacob Malual Ateny, is also onsite coordinating engineers, vendors and eager community members.
This April, the building will be completed. Deng, Jordan, Dr. Shakira, and her daughter and son-in-law, both physicians in training, will open the clinic doors to the community.
Location:  Malek Village
                 Juba-Khartoum Freeway
                 Near Bor Town, Jonglie State
                 South Sudan.

The organization
Universal Unity, a family-operated non-profit organization, was founded in 1991 and has been doing various projects in health and education both in the US and abroad since that time. However, it was not until 5 years ago that Educate Refugees was born, after Dr. Shakira and her daughter met the so-called "Lost Boys of Sudan", young men living in San Jose, CA studying at various colleges in the area.
